Jim,

The Grateful Dead encourage bootleg recordings of their shows. Now mass
distribution has changed quite a bit since they started performing, but
the recordings on there may very well be "authorized", though "public
domain" is another matter. I remember a while back they wanted to sell
live recordings online and asked eTree and the like to remove the
bootlegs... The public uproar was pretty bad, and they backed down very
quickly. To the best of my knowledge they're still allowing bootleg
copies to be distributed.

The only thing is that the licensing is not consistent. For example,
there
are Grateful Dead recordings on there which would not fit the criteria
of
being public domain or Creative Commons.
