Ok... Nortel die hard fanatics will probably hire a hit man to get rid of me. But let the truth be told :).

Assuming there are Nortel experienced folks in here who used/uses BCM's, and also Asterisk... and who are MORE open minded than the die hard fanatics... I'm curious to know why would one invest behind a BCM vs. harnessing the power of Asterisk.

Asterisk has come a LONG way... my production servers have been up and running for 2+ years without issues... except a reboot and shutdown/restart that was planned. I've seen BCM's and other telecom gear installed at offices for an astronomical cost of the hardware + consulting fees...

Local consultants now have the power in their finger tips to deploy business grade PBX platforms at small & medium sized business... harnessing off the shelf computer systems. I've read a LOT of things about BCM's and its capabilities....

So now it begs the question -- why use a BCM where the price starts at a few thousand dollars, when you can deploy a system beyond the wildest dreams of a BCM on a $200 refurb PC, with the appropriate FXO and/or T1 cards or related technologies. Asterisk is here to stay, and as much as the big telcos hate to admit the power of Asterisk and Open Source ... this is a new revolution. Opensource VoIP today, is what the Internet was yesterday. Its a Hot Cake. Gaining RAPID momentum and recognition each day.

So you as a Nortel BCM expert -- would you join the Asterisk revolution? If not, why not? And what can a BCM do, that Asterisk can't?

Cheers!
Reza.
