I don't think anyone disrespected your opinion, but specifically for myself I
was trying to determine more about the nature of your dilemma.

I mean a cheap box will cost you maybe $200 to run Asterisk. But if you want
RAID1, a decent network card and a power supply whose reliability is better
and output is cleaner will cost you $500.

That's a 250% increase in the cost of the system, but Nortel's basic MICS
comes with all of that. (well maybe not the HDD, but you get my point, I
hope).

At what point is the expenditure for higher reliability no longer worth the
cost? For someone such as yourself, $2.50/mo more (let's be honest, a 100%
increase in price) increase is simply not worth it, based on your comparison
to the service provider you left, who was charging far more per month for the
service, but "threw in" the feature.

This is where I ask again -- what is your overall cost increase with the new
provider compared to the old service provider who provided the feature for
less? What's your overall cost of having a VOIP did and paying for every
minute of incoming and outgoing service? For most here, the cost of a $5/mo
DID plus their minutes usage leaves them in a far better position than a
$36.30/mo + LD charges does. For others, emulating the old system by paying
a flat-rate DID and not getting concurrent calls is a better overall deal.
Your situation may be different, or you may be trying to optimize your
system, or you may just be curious. Without more information it's difficult
to tell, and without the data, your question comes across like the guy who
buys the cheapest products possible, and then complains about quality.

Maybe that's just me though; I'm certainly interested in the details of the
request if you're willing to provide them.
