For me it was a simple decision: it's the best phone out there in the form factor it's in. OpenMoko's huge and ugly, G1 is hideous and huge, HTC touch would have had me if it had a bigger screen and not WinMo, touch pro is too big, X1 wasn't (still isn't?) around and isn't hackable, and blackberries universally suck, IMO. Jailbreak the iphone and it's pretty damn good, IMO. It's got its warts too, but for me, it was the best phone of the bunch, by far.
