So one day before I leave for my trip, and I'm testing out my phone to make sure all is well.

All is not well - I can't get the sim card to register, and calls to United Mobile go unanswered.

Not much to go on, except for this article (http://tinyurl.com/cj9po2), which suggests that United Mobile is no longer in business.

Aside from the EUR60 that I'm out, I am now without phone service while on my trip.

Lovely.

Anybody got any advice? Are there carriers over there who'll sell a SIM card over the counter that'll work everywhere?

And of course my first stop is Iceland, which is not part of the EU.

Grrrrr.

First of all, thanks to all for the helpful responses.

I'm going to be in Iceland, Denmark and Germany. Basically 2 days in each place. I will want data for sure, and I don't have to worry about forwarding my cell because I front end my calls with my Asterisk system. If people call my Fido cell number it will go straight to my Asterisk voicemail (I use GSM codes to forward my cell to a DID that goes to my Asterisk mailbox). People can leave me voicemail and I'll get those by email.

Mostly I want data to stay current with email, and so I can use my GPS with google maps.

The phone is unlocked because I bought it that way (check on Amazon for the Nokia E71. I can't say enough good about this phone), so I would expect it'll take any SIM card I install in it.

I have to say the plans from United Mobile look like they might give me what I'm looking for. Not the cheapest perhaps, but the convenience is there (I can use the same card for my whole trip), and the data rates will be OK in Denmark and Germany (and I can handle paying a few extra bucks while in Iceland). Having it also work in the US is a definite bonus. Makes for a good all-around SIM card.

I'll look at the other suggestions though.

Thanks again to all for the really great info.

Jim

Sorry if this is a bit OT, but I'm going to Europe for a week in May, and I'll be in several countries.

I bought an unlocked Nokia E71 phone, so I figure it'll handle whatever is out there, but if I try and use my Fido SIM card while overseas I will pay in ways that I don't want to think about (I've heard plenty of horror stories about massive roaming charges, and even more for data).

I've been trying to figure out if I can get a Vodafone card or something that'll allow me to get data when I'm out and about (I've gotten hooked on using Google maps with the GPS in my E71). A little experiment just now showed that the data I'd consume, at the rate Fido charges, would end up costing me potloads of money for very little actual data (they charge $0.03 per kb, which adds up really fast.

Anybody have any experience or advice to offer?

Much obliged,

Jim
