Usually all the buttons are scanned in a matrix from the microcontroller, so
neither side of the switch will be at ground or v+ and is likely directly
connected to the processor with little or no protection

I also thought about your solution too but then I have to hang a phone on 
the outside.  I would prefer having just a face plate with one button on it.
Those one-button phone costs an arm & an leg > US$400...

I am not sure how delicate the circuitry is behind the redial button (anyone

knows?), but i agree that having a relay should protect it...
