I believe you need to install the asterisk-addons package - it will include the cdr_mysql module that FreePBX is configured out of the box to use.

take a look at /var/log/asterisk/cdr-csv/Master.csv
The data you want will be there in CSV format.
/var/log/asterisk/messages may have a clue as to why the database didn't connect/save correctly,
look for lines that mention odbc
