I STUDIED your EXCELLENT AstLinux article in Tom's Netwroking. I hope you can help me better unserstand your discussion about codec transcoding in the section titled "CPU Limitations". For some reason, I must be missing something very basic about codecs and transcoding.
1. Doesn't G711u require compression?
You mention "Using G.729a on each leg of the call allows it to be compressed down to <10 kbps of data, but real-time compression is a very CPU intensive task. The SC1100 CPU on the Net4801 will only successfully encode two streams of voice using G.729a compression."
Doesn't G711u require any compression? Or, does it only require "encoding".
2. If I setup my AstLinux (or any Asterisk) to allow only G729a and if my phones (endpoints) are set to G729a and if I set my ITSP connection to G729a, will AstLinux still have to "compress" anything? Or, will it be just "passthrough"?
Also, your mention of the Gumstix as a "ptotocol tranlator" intrigued me and raised a question:
Fro your article:
"The initial application of such a small Asterisk system was as a protocol translator, allowing common SIP desk phones to be easily adapted to use the IAX2 protocol native to Asterisk. Unlike SIP, IAX2 streams combine call setup signaling and the voice data stream into a single connection that easily traverses NAT routers and firewalls. The combination of a Gumstix based translator with SIP desk phones allows for the creation of distributed phone systems ideal for companies with many home office based employees, or for connecting several smaller offices into one primary Asterisk server."
How excatly are SIP desk phones adapted to use IAX protocol? Would it be somehing like the following or is it simpler than that?
Local group of SIP phones will be registered to a "Gumstix server" behind a NAT. This Gumstix server will "register" to a remote main Asterisk server behind a firewall using "IAX2 Trunking" . In such a set up, each home user would need a "Gumstix server".
Thanks again for an insightful AstLinux article.

Manny,
My home office is running on a Net4801 and Astlinux. I have 6 SIP phones
around the place. In fact I recently wrote an article about astlinux for
Tome's Networking, see
http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Sections-article153.php
What you describe is not hard to envision at all. The most troublesome
part will be the FXO interfaces to the PSTN. I tried a Digium TDM400p
card in a mini-ITX system before migrating to the Soekris board. The
Digium board has issues with IRQ management and many mini-ITX
motherboards will simply not handle it well.
I'd suggest you look for a freestanding quad port SIP FXO interface.
There are several of these around. I'd be curious to know if you find
one that works well. I've been unable to experiment with such devices.
Alternatively, consider using an ITSP to bring your incomming calls into
your server via IP. This is what I do at present. I call forward my
remaining two POTS lines to a DID provided by an ITSP. Outgoing calls
are all via IP anyway.
