Herbert,

Hopefully following that same path, I'll be able to get the php5 stuff 
figured out.  It looks like there is a patch for php 5.0.4.  Not sure if 
it will apply against 5.1.2 or if it's even an issue (there may be 
another issue because it does compile most of the php binary--just 
chokes towards the zend stuff)
