Hello everyone,

AstLinux 0.4.0 has hit the mirror. The updates are too numerous to
mention. However, I can tell you that this is the first release built
from the brand new build system. Nearly every application has been
upgraded, and there are several new exciting features:

1) Native sounds are now included. The native sound prompts for ulaw
and g729 formats are now included by default.

2) Wifi support. Build in support for Atheros cards via madwifi.
Kernel modules (and iwconfig) are included for all other supported Linux
cards. If someone is willing to help, we can easily get hostap running
as well (kernel modules included, btw).

3) New kernel. 2.6.16.12 has been included. I also included a patch to
the natsemi driver that features interrupt mitigation via the Linux NAPI
feature. I have found that this reduces CPU load by many magnitudes and
improves overall network performance on Soekris/WRAP boards.

4) microperl included by default

5) Nearly everything from the opt package has been integrated back into
the main distro.

6) Asterisk 1.2.7.1, Zaptel 1.2.5, and libpri 1.2.2. Zaptel now
includes zttool for everyone that has been asking.

7) WRAP led support (Soekris broken until 0.4.1).

8) chan_misdn and wanpipe. I have left these out of this release. This
new release was held up several months and I couldn't wait for the
issues with these two pieces of software to be worked out. I will be
working on getting them back in to 0.4.1.

9) SNMP support. Client, server, trap daemon, MIBS, everything are all
included. All I have to do is write a good init script...

10) uclibc. Everything is built against uclibc. This results in a much
smaller image and reduced memory usage. The Soekris image with all of
this added software and sounds is only 36MB on disk.

11) Speaking of 36MB, the base images are now 48MB. I know, I don't
like it either. However, this is considered a stopgap until I get the
new image format and boot loader worked out. Stay tuned for more on
that. This also means that you won't be able to upgrade to this release
with astup. I am very sorry about that, but as I said before I am
working on a new image format that will hopefully solve all of these
problems.

The ISO and raw boot images are available here:

I will have the VMWare Player images and Windows install packages
available by tomorrow when I make the full announcement. This is just a
sneak peek for the loyal readers of AstLinux-Users!

It has been a long hard road, but hopefully 0.4 will be worth the wait!
