Which modifications do you want to make to the grub file (I suppose you mean 
/boot/grub/grub.conf)? Perhaps you may test your changes at the boot prompt 
(editing the command line with "e") until it works, then logging in, making 
the root partition writable with "mount -o rw,remount /" and editing the 
file permanently from inside Astlinux...

By the way, on my system (with AMI BIOS 1.21.12) the only way of make the 
USB boot work is to ask the BIOS to boot from "USB HDD". Any oher 
alternative ("USB RMD-HDD", "USB FDD" and a half dozen more) fails.
