I read over the rc.conf file and checked into the inadyn, that didn't address my needs. Below is comment from rc.conf concerning EXTIF being static, mine is dynamic.
# If EXTIP is set, the remaining STATIC config is read instead of the
# default, which is DHCP client on $EXTIF. If you are using a T1/E1
# EXTGW is also the PtP address. You can enter as many DNS servers as
# you wish.  They will be added in order.
>From above, I see if I do NOT set EXTIF here, I get a default process. Seems to be what I want, but somehow something is not functioning right. My cable modem never gets to sync up.

While I have the SMC router between astlinux and the cable modem, I see the internet. Here are the service status at this point from astlinux gui, if that might help....
Service Status Process Count
Asterisk UP 15
HTTP Daemon UP 4
SSH Daemon UP 2
NTP Daemon UP 2
DNSMasq Daemon UP 1
Inet Daemon UP 1
Syslog Daemon UP 1
I tried looking at each area in astlinux gui, but did not find any "renew" feature anywhere. I have set my EXTIFMAC= to be the MAC address used by my old SMC router. I noticed on my cable modem that it is looking for that MAC address. Is it possible that the spoof of MAC address is not 'fooling' the cable modem ?

PS I am running with the astlinux 12/08/2005, version 0.3 I think.

Check your rc.conf, I know Kris worked on it, since I had the same
problem and suggested how to fix it.
