This brings up an issue for me. I just blew a few bucks on a "Disk on
Module" gizmo. Has 1gb in flash that connects directly to the IDE
interface. My intent is to go "diskless" but I also want to avoid the use
of a USB dongle hanging out the back of box once I put it into production.

What I plan to do is give the ASTBOOT partition about 96mb and then setup a
second partition that I will use as my ASTKD. I have played with this
config previously with a 256mb CF card and it seemed to work ok. I have
played with it enough using release v4.2 to understand what I have to do in
GRUB.CONF to make it find my partitions. However, I am currently running
the SVN 326 version of ASTLINUX and have been testing this version using a
CF ASTBOOT and a USB ASTKD.

Question is: Is there something about the more recent SVN versions that
will make it tricky to go without the USB based ASTKD or should what I am
planning to do work ok? I am still kind of new to this distro so if screws
up I could be scratching my head for a week until I figure it out.

Thanks

the same behaviour you describe when running from IDE without a keydisk
(seems to work as if it were running from CD whether the media is RO or
not). Puzzled me, too - I just gave it a USB keydisk and all was well. Hope
this helps!

Why yes Matt. I am not using a Keydisk. I was thinking of using another
IDE drive as a keydisk. (Or maybe I'll break down and buy a USB memory
stick ).

I was just thinking there should be a way to run the whole thing off the
hard drive.

I got a softphone to listen to an echotest today! Fun Fun!
