Thanks, what you said is how I expected it to work.

What was messing me up, I was using a previous AstLinux CF.  Even  
though I 'erased' and 'repartitioned' the CF drive on my Mac OS X  
machine we all know the linux partition was left in place.  So after  
overwriting the first 48M or so with a new image, I stick the card  
back into the Soekris, and goofy things were happening.

So, the Disk Utility app on Mac OS X has an option to write 0's when  
erasing a drive, I did that,  fdisk'ed, genkd'ed, all is well.
