You really want to leave the serial port alone. That's the only place you'll have a console on the net4801 box. If I recall there is a header for a second serial port so you could use that for your weather instrument. You'd have to add a hole on the case for the second port, but that shouldn't be too hard if you have access to a Dremel tool.
