Michael:

I think you will find that 256mb is luxurious for this application. Cannot
imagine you would need more. One of mine has 512mb of RAM and I think the
status screen says it is using only 40mb. Only reason I used a 512mb chip
is because that is what I had laying around at the time. It was a waste.

I have never used onboard audio with Asterisk. I know some who have used it
to do an "overhead page" so I guess it might be an attractive feature to
some.

Yes, the added CPU power helps. Especially if you are doing
routing/firewall/vpn or a lot of transcoding.

Have yet to need more than 1 USB port but can see where this might be
attractive.

There is a "sidecar" piece that was an option on the T5700. This along with
a 90 degree riser card was used to make the PCI card usefull. When you
indicated before that the T5700 had a PCI slot, I assumed it had this
sidecar piece. With the sidecar, it would have been pretty easy to add a
Digium TDM card for an Astlinux config or maybe a 2 port NIC for a m0n0wall
config. The PCI slot issue is disappointing. This feature would have made
the box much more flexible.

I think you could get the flash in the T5700 to work if you hit it with a
bigger hammer. There may be a "write protect" on it that requires a jumper
change or something similar. In a worst case, the flash should be able to
be removed. It mounts in a 44 pin laptop drive type pin arrangment. Once
removed, you should be able to burn it on another machine. There just has
to be a way to do this. Have you downloaded the docs?

I have noticed some of the 800mhz and 1ghz MaxTerm 3300 boxes listed on eBay
for cheap money. These have a PCI slot that is usable, 256mb RAM, USB and a
built in CF slot. They are going used in the $90-150 range on eBay. These
could be interesting to use for Aslinux experimentation. I think they can
be had new for client production use in the $450 price range. They are
small, fanless and low power. Should give similar performance to your T5700
but with the added flexibility to have that onboard PCI card for a TDM card.

I have also had very good luck with a little known barbones box called a LEX
NEO. This is a 1ghz VIA fanless with three NICS, built in CF and 2 USB.
But it has no PCI card. This one works great for m0n0wall and I have
Astlinux running on one now. There is a slightly larger model from same
vendor that has a PCI slot. But these are pretty expensive for use as toys.
Not too bad for production deployment for a client though. By time you get
RAM in them you are talking $500-600, similar to other mini-itx production
quality machines.

Subject: [Astlinux-users] Astlinux on HP T5700 thin client

With only a little experimentation I was sucessful in getting this working.
I was not able to use in Flash DOM from some reason. I couldn't physically
connect it to another PC to flash it from the Astlinux CD. I ended up using
a USB stick with 3 partitions which is quite satisfactory.

I can only see a few advantages over my Net4801;

1. The opportunity to add more RAM if necessary. The basic 256MB RAM is a
common SODIMM.

2. Onboard audio capability

3. More CPU power for transcoding to/from G.729

4. More USB ports (4)

5. Available PCI slot. Not needed in my case.

Disadvantages

1. Only one NIC. Cannot be used as a router without further effort (USB
NIC?)

2. Cannot use PCI slot without removing it from the case. Same as Net4801.

3. Plastic case.

4. No activity lights.

5. Has an on/off switch (less idiot-proof)

Michael
