Take at look at this site. http://www.linux-usb.org/usbnet/ Unless I am completely reading it wrong (wouldn't be the first time), it appears to me that in older kernels (pre 2.4) that Ethernet to USB (in addition to USB host to host) was supported by the usbnet driver. After 2.4 and later, the various class devices were broken into "mini-drivers" such as asix. I thought it might be worth a try...
