Peter,

  The syslinux binary that is included in the downloads may not work
on all systems (as you've found out).  You can either:

a)  Compile syslinux from runnix/astlinux

b)  Use syslinux from your distro (yum install syslinux)

  You can then just use "syslinux /dev/sda1".
