I have done it without any changes and it worked, but when I try to build it
for the arm xscale architecture I get the error.

No idea based on that output. Please try checking out a clean copy from
svn and building again using the following steps.
1). Copy astlinux.config to .config
2). make oldconfig
3). make
Then report any problems.
Do not make changes to the default package selection until you know that
the system works.
I have not built a system for the Gumstix board so I cannot say what
problems you might encounter that are not normally found with more
traditional hardware. But it should work fine.
