All,
I'm hoping you can help me with a symptom that I've been fighting for
nearly six months with no success. I'm not sure whether the culprit is
caused by hardware, Asterisk (1.2.21.1), or my AstLinux installation.
I'm posting on this list because in the many months that I've been
subscribed (and quietly lurking) I seldom see people being attacked for
asking an occasional dumb question. If this question is better posed
elsewhere, please advise.
Here's the symptom:
Intermittently (a dozen or so times a week), the log reveals failed DNS
lookups ("no such host") and failed external registrations to multiple
SIP providers. Simultaneously, all the stations (both on local to the
LAN and off-site) become UNREACHABLE. It's as if the network just "goes
away." This typically lasts ten or twenty seconds and clears without
fanfare. However, now and again (such as today) it has lasted much
longer.
There have been two times when the symptom has lasted long enough for me
to catch it in the act. In both cases, the symptom lasted for many tens
of minutes. I've logged-in without incident from my off-site office
using Putty (which seems a little odd if the network were actually
down). In both cases, I typed "sip show peers," noted incredible status
times (~34000 ms today), and then literally watched the symptom clear
within seconds before my very eyes (station peers become REACHABLE,
successful registration with external SIP providers, etc.). Sadly,
because the symptom clears so quickly, I have not been able to do any
troubleshooting. It's almost as if I was able to "awaken" the system by
logging on - but all along, AstLinux is busily filling the log with errors.
So far, I've replaced the NIC card and Ethernet switch but the symptom
remains. Amazingly, the symptoms are usually brief, we have very light
call traffic, so we seldom drop calls.
Your thoughts? (And please use little words; I'm no expert.)
~ Dan
