Wondering if there has been any progress examining the geni586 img?

Ok. Now we're getting somewhere. There may be an issue with the
geni586 image. I'll try to take a look over the weekend.

I'll weigh in here and observe that I was unable to create a vmware
virtual disk using the geni586 image file... I had to use the runnix
image file and then copy the geni586 build into the os subdirectory.

Not Mark here, but SPECIFICALLY the geni586 image file will not
install properly for me.
Some time back we had an off list exchange, then you got busy with
money jobs and it got left in the dust.
I will be away until Sunday, but if you can't find my response, and
get different results, let me know and I will resend my procedure to
you and the list if you'd like.

Mark,
Specifically (I mean exactly) which img.gz (note not tar.gz)
file is wrong? Anything with an img.gz should be an image file.
I'm going to have to call you on this because I just gunzip'ed
each of the img.gz files that are posted on my site and I can
guarantee that they are all image files that should be able to
be dd'ed to a disk and work. I've used these exact files to
test the following images:
via-serial
via
net5501
net4801
I know those have worked using dd to write the img files to the
CF card. I have not tested the geni586 or viac7 images. They
were created in the same method and should work.
Note that because of my limited time recently, I have only
tested to targets with a single compact flash card. I have not
attempted to use a USB thumb drive or other target. I should
get some time tomorrow to fire up a machine with vmware on it to
do some further testing on there. I can also try writing out
these images to CF with physdiskwrite
The install procedure from the cdrom is not working. The
bootable image will work. If we want to continue to allow
installation from a cdrom under Windows, it will take some
additional effort to restore that functionality. I've only used
the cdrom for bootable testing so I wasn't actually aware of the
existence of those routines until after I created the 0.6.1
files. Had I known it was there, I would have removed it before
releasing the ISOs because I know it won't work in it's current
state.

This is what I've been trying to say for a week now.
The .img.tgz file on Darrick's website isn't an image file but
rather a
collections of the manual install files.

Using physdiskwrite gives me a disk which results in a kernel

I get the same result attempting to install the img file using
dd to a CF card.
I have no idea why the one step install doesn't work, and it
seems others do it with success, and no general interest to
explore the failure.
Install runnix then install the tar file and all boots and works!
Anyone smarter than I interested in the details of the failure?
