If someone has patches to add "memtest" and "shell" options to syslinux, 
I would be happy to commit them!

I've been wanting this for about 6 months, but it's too low on my list 
of priorities for me to get to (I'm neck deep in doing a version bump of 
the kernel to something less than 3 months old).
