You can specify registration timeout in both/either the client or the server
but I believe that the shorter duration will take precedence.  So if a
client device is set to register every 3600 seconds, but the asterisk server
is setup for 60 seconds, then the client will be instructed to re-register
once a minute.  Same applies for when asterisk acts as a client to a SIP
Trunk.

For devices/servers all within the same LAN, you should be fine with quite
long registration time outs.  For devices (or trunks) that are at the other
end of a WAN and especially those on the other side of a NAT gateway, then
you probably want fairly short time outs.  SIP Trunk and DID providers
usually document somewhere on their web sites a recommended timeout (or a
minimum or a maximum)
