Hi Jason,

I see your two emails to the list... they seem different, but related I
guess...

First, the rule is the root password is not changed when the web admin password
is changed, *unless* the root password is still the default.

If the root password was still the default, then the PHP system call to change
it is...
--
shell('echo \'root:'.$pass1.'\' | /usr/sbin/chpasswd -m >/dev/null
2>/dev/null', $status);
--
Note the password is enclosed in single quotes for the shell echo, so no
character expansion should be performed, and you should get the password you
expected.

Now, if you simply lost your root password... I suppose doing a basic backup
of your config via the web interface, build a fresh image (on a new CF card)
and restore your config. A few additional tweaks may be necessary depending on
your customizations.

Without trying it, the more power user method would be to mount your unionfs
partition of the CF card on a Linux box (the first ext2 partition), and delete
the "/etc/shadow" and "/etc/shadow-" files to restore the default root
password. I'd rather not elaborate further.

Of course, not knowing the root password, should not be an easy thing to reset.
:-)

Lonnie
