Yes, but note #4 can be skipped as udev adds /dev/snd/ automatically for us.

Hopefully Dan doesn't need 'alsamixer', seems they are only using it to set the 
defaults, possibly there is another way if required.

It seems the file "/proc/asound/card0/oss_mixer" is the magic...
