the flash cards that are born with the HP 55/57 series have excellent long life.
I have yet to see a failure on any of the used units I have "repurposed" to
AstLinux. All were originally XPe systems.
In a "home" system I believe there is little to be concerned about.
Some date back to AstLinux 0.5 and the days when the "alternate" web interface
was born.

Adrian,

True, AstLinux takes measures to reduce writes to flash storage.

But, there are important things that need to be immediately written to flash
storage, such as voicemail, CDR logs, mail, etc. . The system logs are in RAM
by default.

Many years of practical use in the field, this has demonstrated to be a nice
balance, AstLinux has been around for almost 10 years ! I have relatively old
CF Flash cards that still work fine, and newer flash storage have even better
wear-leveling features.

While a lot has been written about flash's limited write cycles, with modern
wear-leveling, it is not a general problem.

If you are concerned, SLC flash is better than MLC flash, also if you only need
1-2 GB of storage, a 4-8 GB storage media will allow the wear-leveling to
spread the wear over more area.

Perhaps it's late and brain not working correctly, but I have assumed that
astlinux runs up in to ram, that way the flash does not get written to a lot.
I undertsand that the conf files are all in flash, but I was thinking that
voicemail, mail and cdr logs will also be in ram and will get lost when
rebooted or power loss etc.

/var/spool/asterisk/mail and /var/spool/asterisk/voicemail and
/var/log/asterisk/cdr-csv/ etc

I did a reboot of the thin client and everything was still there, even a power
off and back on keeps all the files.

Just re-read the installation docsa and see the persistent storage
options/setup. Would it be possible or practical to have various items stored
in ram? such as voicemail, the cdr? and the mail? on a simple home system these
would not be as important as in a business environment.
