A quad core 64-bit CPU running at 1.0 GHz begs the question as to what to
do with it. I mean Astlinux as a network gateway and VoIP server isn't
going to use much of that. So, what else can could I use such a box for?
Whatever it is must be useful and not introduce any instability at all...
it is absolutely critical that core AstLinux gateway and VoIP services are
not interfered with.
Do these CPUs have virtualization extensions? Could you run a bare bones
KVM hypervisor, then run Astlinux in one VM and "something else" in
another?
What could that be?
Well, I'm running Crashplan in a VM to backup my NAS, though it drags Java
and is something of a memory hog (memory size seems to grow with size of
your backup set... multi-terabyte backup set demands multi-gigabyte memory).
I've also just installed a couple of UniFi wireless access points (wow, big
upgrade over consumer grade stuff... these things are enterprise grade at
consumer price... I got the AP-AC-LITE's for about $85 each, check them
out). They are managed by controller s/w you can install on linux...
unfortunately drags Java as well, but not as much of a memory hog.
So clearly some useful things could be done if these boxes have the horse
power.
