Armin, It is a permissions thing ...
vi creates a temp file in /var/tmp/ which is only writable by root, so it exits for non-root users. Though "nano" works for non-root users. Good enough for editing ~/.bash_profile . Additionally, our new upstream "restricted" users using /bin/rbash can't edit at all, so not an issue there.
