I suggest that you actually try the software and form your own opinion.
If there are any reasons to consider ath5k "not ready", please provide
actual details.

I consider ath5k a very reliable driver, but it's my opinion based on my
needs and my usage pattern.

As a more objective measure, please consider that ath5k is not
considered an experimental driver (that is, CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL doesn't
need to be enabled to enable ath5k).

No, non-standard modes are not supported.

There is no HAL part.  It's free software and part of the Linux kernel.
