Actually it should be possible to do most of this in software, something like multichannel operation on different modes on each channel will be possible with WiFi Direct but that specification is not yet available publicly. The idea is the same though but you will see something like a STA and an AP at the same time. The challenge in this area is fast channel switching and with newer hardware this becomes easier.
