Not sure if this is of any help. But i ran into similar problems a while
back. Described here:

I never got any reply. But i strongly suspect that broadcast/multicast
where none functional in ath9k in that kernel. I now run 2.6.30.x and it
actually seems to work now.

So maybe the driver in ubuntu 9.04 has the same problems? Have you tried
wireless-compat available for ubuntu?
