Google held a news conference Thursday to talk about its ultra high-speed
Internet service and announce its new television service.
The service is part of the company's fiber project. Kansas City was selected as
the first city for the project to launch.
Google Fiber executives said the with download and upload speeds of 1,000
megabits per second, it would change the television experience.
The high-definition television service would include all major broadcast
networks and video-on-demand for a monthly fee. Executives said the television
service would be able to record up to eight TV shows.
The company will offer three packages. The first package, which includes
gigabyte, plus TV service, would cost customers $120 a month, plus a $300 fee
to bring fiber into a user's home. Executives said the construction fee would
be waved with a two-year contract.
There is a second package for the faster Internet service service only for $70
a month with the same connection fee.
The third option is the conventional current broadband service for $25 a month.
Google executives said they'll it leave up to Kansas City's neighborhoods to
petition for service. Areas that exhibit the strongest demand will get the
services installed first.
Consumers interested in getting the service were encouraged to preregister
through the company's website Google.com/Fiber.
