You shouldn't have to but there is a menu setting for formatting an sd card. Press the 7 key and keep moving through the menu options until you get to it. Has the card been used before? formatting would erase any data on the card. If you can't record on it you might be write protected but Victor would tell you that. that is another issue but we can tackle that if we need to.
