I posted this yesterday. Part of the problem is now solved. The 'resource busy' was apparently caused by the new presence of the KsCD ikon on the taskbar. After removing that, the alsa test
/usr/bin/aplay /usr/share/sounds/KDE_Startup.wav worked for root. But as user mythtv I get ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:836:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC semaphore aplay: main:547: audio open error: Permission denied - and I have yet to find out what permission I need to change. Hope this clears up some of the confusion.
