How's this for weird? SOMEHOW, yum succeeded in installing a 2.6.23...i585
following the 2.6.22 ... i686 kernel?
Could be a glitch from the wireless & alsa not liking the 2.6.23 kernel.
I'm backing out the wireless and alsa to prior to installing the i686 and
