What's so bizarre about these definitions in
packages/xemacs-packages/auctex/Makefile

VERSION = 1.46
AUTHOR_VERSION = 11.55
MAINTAINER = Uwe Brauer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
PACKAGE = auctex
PKG_TYPE = regular
REQUIRES = xemacs-base
CATEGORY = standard

The XEmacs package tarballs are just numbered sequentially.

First they are pre-released, then declared released, or superseded
quickly, if broken.

M-x list-packages
and press
i runs the command pui-display-info
which will have this to say about auctex 1.46:

Installed upstream ver: 11.55 Available upstream ver: 11.55
