I think that we should probably set the default of TeX-parse-self to
t.  It should not cause any files to be written (like TeX-auto-self
would do), and it will cause AUCTeX to behave out of the box more
powerfully to the average user, with a performance impact tolerable on
today's machines.  So that setting should be mostly ok.  We might get
reports for very large files in some cases, though (I have had
occasional runins of that kind in the past, often leading to me fixing
something).  But those cases should then get fixed, and people can,
after reporting such a problem, still manually reset TeX-auto-self.
