On a related topic, the doc string for the variable 'TeX-auto-global' says that it "must end with a directory separator". To me, a directory separator is the oblique symbol '/' commonly called a back-slash. However, the default setting for this variable, given in 'tex-site.el' is "/usr/local/var/auctex", which does not end in '/'.
