Thanks, I set this variable a very long time ago and forgot about it. Is
there any real benefit for having it?

Now that I use the wonderful TeX-output-dir I am annoyed  if my working
directory gets polluted. So either I set the variable to nil or

@Al any chance to have these *.ini file placed in TeX-output-dir?
