Ok,

I will prepare the patches along your recommendations. FYI, this update
works fine for TOC titles, but not for other type of references
(e.g. @anchors & @node's) as the code still scans for LaTeX-like regexps
--- as usual Texinfo situation is sort of half-done, which is due to
this that even current Texinfo users use Texinfo less than LaTeX...

Anyhow, this update was indeed quite useful to me as it also allows
promote/demote of titles, this is why I am happy to share it with other
AUCTeX/Texinfo users.
