Thanks for your suggestions. I'm using zathura as my pdf viewer. It's
interesting that this isn't the case with other viewers (I haven't
personally checked it).

In theory, a .pdf should be refreshed in the same instance of the
viewer. I know this works for SumatraPDF on Windows and Skim on macOS.
For me "View" also refreshes the pdf in the same instance, both with Okular and
Evince on Linux.
