What does happen is that get fewer input choices with WDM/KS
than I do with WDS or MME - and none (with WDM/KS) that will
appear to enable me record streaming audio (which is possible
with either WDS or MME as the host.

Perhaps I misunderstood, but I thought that that WDM-KS did
not show up for you, which is unexpected.
WASAPI is only for Vista and later, so it won't be there on XP.
