Thanks.

Please check again now.  When did you check?  I changed this before you sent your message, about 3 hours ago.  There may be an up to 12hr delay as we have a CDN that caches pages - though I thought this page would not be cached because of the ? in the URL.

I think perhaps in future I should change the page in two steps, first when we KNOW Audacity is going to be released:

2.2.1 - Future version, but about to become the official current version.
2.2.0 - Latest version, but about to be superseded.

Then once 2.2.1 HAS been released.

2.2.1 - Current Version
2.2.0 - An old version.  A more up to date version is available.

Then even with caching the messages come out OK during the changeover period, which we can't make instantaneous.

Now i only have 2.2.1 which seems ok but i dont know what it says with 2.2.0 other then if i change the URL my self.

If i change the URL to 2.3.1 and 2.3 and 2 i get this:

http://www.audacityteam.org/download/?from_ver=2.3.1
You are using a future version of Audacity

http://www.audacityteam.org/download/?from_ver=2.3
New Version Available

http://www.audacityteam.org/download/?from_ver=2
[nothing]

Sure, but version numbers are 3 digits so the last two would not be asked for by 'Audacity'.

http://www.audacityteam.org/download/?from_ver=2.2.0
New Version Available

I guess its not super bad to launch a webbrowser to check for updates but i would properly prefer a dialog to appear and a progress bar to see its checking for updates and then link to open web browser only if new version is available so the web browser does not need to be launched unless there is a new version.

Thanks for the suggestion.

ZoneAlarm and similar firewall software block internet connections of the kind you suggest.  If we did do the connection ourselves we would have to tell users it is safe to override the firewall warning.  We don't like having to tell users to override warnings. That is one reason why we launch a browser.
