... by calling our attention to inappropriate strings that break the rule I call "Substitute, don't concatenate."
Examples that lately came to my attention (too late to fix in this release) were these: "\n * \"" "\" (because the shortcut \'" "\' is used by \"" "\")\n" ... where the code concatenates these strings with certain names. These really should have been just one string with substitution slots in it: "\n * \"%s\" (because the shortcut \'%s\' is used by \"%s\")\n" This is better because translators need to read complete phrases giving context of substitutions, not sentence fragments in isolation whose proper translation is not clear. My rewrite is not a complete sentence, but it's a whole clause, and doesn't have strange mismatched parentheses or quotation marks. Another example: "The file with the shortcuts contains illegal shortcut duplicates for \"" "\" and \"" "\".\nNothing is imported." Which should be: "The file with the shortcuts contains illegal shortcut duplicates for \"%s\" and \"%s\".\nNothing is imported." It's difficult for development to catch all of these errors as we accept contributions from many sources. I ask you to be the last line of defense, next translation cycle, by alerting us when you see such sentence fragments. Thank you. Paul Licameli
