Re: what's popular?

Well you'll probably get as many answers as people, I personally would go for a deep rpg, though whether in a fantasy, scifi or psudo modern setting I wouldn't mined provided it had lots of plot, exploration and an actually tactical combat system.

In general terms to be honest, my personal  belief is what is needed in accessible games is  games that are based on judgement, not reaction or chance.

What I mean is, there are loads of games like space invaders games, 2d side scrolling action games etc where the entire challenge comes from reocgnizing and hitting things as quickly as you can, center the spaceships and hit the shoot button, or walk your character and hit.

These are okay in their fashion, but we've seen just too many of them, and their appeal is limited since yonce your reaction speed is up, that's that.

The same in turn based terms might be said for symplistic option and dice roll games, you roll the random dice and see how many squares you move, and that's that, or, you hit attack and see what numbers you get.

what we really need accessible are games that present the player with a variety of objects  in a situation and ask them to make continual decisions. Whether this would take the form of a complex rpg style battle, a detailed representation of an environment in sound, action style, or somethig strategic, ---- heck I could even imagine a detailed enough sprots game filling this need (albeit sports games are very much not my thing), still that's I think what we really could do with.

Of course, there are some games with this level of judgement and comprehention of in game elements and complex relations between them. Swamp as an action fps with real time elements,  Sarah as an adventure game, castaways in the civilization catagory or time of conflict as pure stratogy, but there just isn't enough, certainly not as goes for complexity in player judgemen ts.

thus, if you were making a koungfu game as ghost rider suggested, something with real timing or deep combat and a system that a person couldn't master just by playing boppit would be the thing.
