If you have the output, you can convert it using iTunes. Import the AIFF file into iTunes by playing it. Now, go to Preferences, General, Import Settings and set parameters for your conversion (I use lossless). Save the preferences, select the track and then VO+Shift+M and "Create <format> Version" where <format> is what you selected in the import settings.
Edit: is this VM a guest or a host? If your VM isn't running on Apple hardware, you're probably on your own.
