No good reason why a plastic iPhone (steel-reinforced, too) shouldn't tolerate being dropped, within sensible limits. Actually, it was the earlier all-glass iPhones which had a record of basically shattering on impact.
iOS 7 on the 18th. I was mistaken. It is the 5S that will be available on the 20th.
