It wouldn't be too difficult to create an accessible version. Maybe have square buttons with a rough surface for black pieces, and have circular buttons with smooth surfaces for white pieces, then make a board with holes to hold the pieces in place.
Clearly the most difficult part of this is making the board to hold the buttons. Another option instead of a regular board would be to buy a pegboard from a hardware store, then find two distinct types of pegs to use for black and white pieces.
