Bryan, jump only needs to be pressed once unless you're gliding. but always hold the directional all the way until you land.
About 1 and a half steps onto the gravel then press the space bar immediately followed by holding the arrow in the direction of the gap and don't stop holding the arrow direction until you land. Once you have those wings it's easier to just glide over the gaps by holding the jump button down and holding the direction down. Before you know it, you're a pro at it. Awesome, I'll be back today.
