Smartglass is far from perfect on IOS, since Microsoft haven't bothered about the accessibility(at least not yet). The Windows 10Xbox App is actually better thanks to better accessibility, also allowing for more functions (with some odd quirks here and there). You can't use external apps such as youtube and twitch with narrator yet, though we hope that functionality will come. You can message people, start parties, change settings (most of them without sighted help anyway) and invite people to games, amongst other things.
I hope that helps. Moreover, I need to do an overhaul on the Audiogames.net article you mention above, but I'm not sure when that'll happen.
